A time back, shortly after moving from the big city (New York city) to Texas Glenn Beck; comedian and political commentator, commented on the farmers(on his radio show). He couldn’t figure out how they could cut and plow along arrow straight rows in their huge fields. He seemed to view this as a mystery. The answer to which I had learned years ago. And I thought it might be good to share that answer to those of this site.
Growing up on the farm, my father taught me many things. Though I will never be able to measure up to his perfection. Working the field is one of the minor lessons though it is one that is seems few of today are aware of.
To begin the farmer has and cares for his equipment, he knows it by feel and sound. When on the tractor he knows when everything is running right, or if something is wrong. This becomes his awareness while in the field. And though he is aware of what is going on around him, that is not his focus. When setting out the lead row to begin the field, the farmer does not focus on where he is, anymore than he focuses on where he has been. No, his focus is on his goal. The intended end of the row. And when he reaches the end of the track his course has remained straight and true.
If he looks back then he will find no deviations. Those to focus on where they are or have been, find it impossible to hold the course. And the work they set out to do is either ruined and/or must be redone.
